Education and Capacity Building for Kayayes in Tamale

Kayayes are young girls working on the big markets carrying groceries for the buyers. If you bought loads of yams, veggies, need to carry bags full of fabric or even cosmetics - you name it, they carry it for you to your means of transport. Being teenagers or even younger than that, they would like to go to school, learn a real profession or craft. That's where we come in. We meet the girls, talk to their parents as we need their support as well, talk to mentors, businesses and schools and get to know what they would like to do - and enroll them. Never underestimate the ground work with projects like this, as some parents prefer their girls to earn money instead of going to school. This is not only funding their school enrollment, their school equipment but also raising awareness about different possibilities with the families of the young girls. This is an ongoing project.
